The problem? 90% of a child’s brain develops before age 5. In low income neighborhoods, only 1 book is available for every 300 children.
The solution? 96% of children under age 5 see a doctor at least once a year!
This November, SCALA is excited to support the vital mission of Reach Out and Read in both Colorado and Kansas. Reach Out and Read is committed to making books a part of preventive pediatric care and breaking the cycle of poverty. Thanks to Reach Out and Read in Kansas and Colorado, more than 260,000 books are prescribed to children each year. For Emelin Martinez of Valley Wide Health Systems, it’s an amazing opportunity to educate both children and their families. “I prescribe books because I love seeing the delight on a child’s face when they accept the book & they begin to turn the pages. For a moment the child forgets they are there for a medical visit & I can speak with parents about how important reading is…”

How can we help?
New/gently used books for children from 0-18 will be accepted. Starting November 14th, drop off books at the Welcome Center in the Memorial Union on campus or at SLIM. Donations will also be accepted during all class weekends through December 3rd.
Please abide by the following guidelines when donating books:
- New or Gently used (covers and pages intact, clean and unmarked pages)
- No textbooks
- No used coloring or activity books
