Meike Carreira, President: Meike is part of the Emporia-3 cohort and currently works as a Graduate Administrative Assistant at SLIM. She will graduate in May and must then look for a real job. She would like to work in either a school library or an archive.
Michelle Mehlhaff, Vice-President: Michelle is part of the Emporia-2 cohort and is in her final semester at SLIM. She is interested in working as an Adult Services librarian in a Public Library.
Wendy Mitchell, Secretary: Wendy is originally from Concordia, KS and now lives in Clay Center, KS with her awesome fiancee, Cody. She is the Director of the Clay Center Carnegie Library and enjoys collection development and program planning. She has been employed in the library field for about 11 of her 25 years and loves books and book people. She likes to read in any free time and reads about 90% Young Adult fiction. Wendy would love to talk Twilight, Hunger Games, or any exciting YA title with you! She also plays video games and watches movies with Cody when she isn’t working, doing homework, or reading. She is cohort #3 and her 4th semester at SLIM. Wendy looks forward to being your SCALA secretary for the next two semesters!
Elizabeth Davis, Treasurer: Betsy Davis is a K-12 librarian in central Kansas. In her fourth semester Betsy is enjoying her time with SLIM. She would like to stay with schools or go into academic libraries. Besides being awesome with librarian things, Betsy is a knitter and attempted ballerina. She lives with her husband James and dog Sophie.
Megan Hertel, Events Coordinator: Megan is in her second semester at SLIM in Emporia Cohort 4. She is interested in becoming an academic librarian after finishing her MLS program.
Chris Rathmel, Webmaster: Chris is in his fourth semester at SLIM in Emporia Cohort 3. He lives in Lawrence, KS with his wife and two pre-school age daughters. Chris believes that digital media are what libraries will primarily be about in the future (however far off that future may be), so he’s trying to learn more computer stuff. He is interested in Library Technology and Reference in a Public Library.
Benjamin Howard, Overland Park Liaison: Benjamin is the Metro Learning Center Liaison to the Emporia chapter of SCALA. A Kansas City native born and raised, Benjamin graduated from Emporia State University with his B.S. in Social Sciences in 2009 and is thrilled to be back at ESU pursuing his MLS. currently in his first semester of graduate study, his professional interests are focused on information literacy and the impact of digitization on the publishing industry. Upon graduation he hopes to work as an information literacy specialist for young adults at a public or academic library. Beyond his classwork, Benjamin is an amateur performance artist, sci-fi geek, and history nerd. He lives in Shawnee, KS with his fiance Christopher.
Leonardo Arellano, Colorado Liaison: Leonardo Arellano is the Colorado Liason to the Emporia chapter of SCALA. He is originally from Kansas and received his B.A. at Emporia State University. In his 2nd semester of the SLIM program, he is currently a digitization intern at the University of Colorado libraries. He hopes to end up with a career in either a public or academic setting. In his spare time he likes philosophical nuance, keeping up with literary and film culture, and spending time with his girlfriend and their herd of cats.
Katie Hill, Faculty Advisor: Katie received her M.L.S. from SLIM at ESU and is currently the Program Director of the Kansas M.L.S. program for SLIM.
